20 years ago the fate of the South African artist and political activist Thami Mnyele (1948-1985) at the hands of the South African apartheid regime so deeply affected and inspired a group of concerned and politically engaged residents of Amsterdam that they created the Thami Mnyele artist-in- residence programme. Since then the programme has enabled artists from all over Africa and its diaspora to stay and work for a period of three months at the Foundation’s studio in Amsterdam. The studio is a lively and well-known meeting place for artists from Africa and the Netherlands. Of the 68 artists that have enjoyed a residency at the studio, the Thami Mnyele Foundation and the CBK-Zuidoost have selected work by 25 artists for the exhibition. The selection gives an impression of contemporary art practice in Africa. The works on exhibition were made by the artists during their stay in Amsterdam and subsequently donated to the Foundation.

Twintig jaar geleden inspireerde de Zuid-Afrikaanse verzetsstrijder en kunstenaar Thami Mnyele (1948-1985) een groep betrokken Amsterdammers tot het oprichten van een artists-in-residence programma, waardoor kunstenaars uit Afrika en diaspora de mogelijkheid kregen om drie maanden in Amsterdam te wonen en te werken. Het atelier, dat de Stichting Thami Mnyele nog steeds beschikbaar stelt, is een levendige en gerenommeerde ontmoetingsplaats geworden van kunstenaars uit Afrika en kunstenaars uit Nederland.

Uit de werken van 68 kunstenaars die de afgelopen twintig jaar in het atelier verbleven, selecteerden Stichting Thami Mnyele en CBK Zuidoost werk van 25 kunstenaars. Deze keuze geeft een glimp van de verscheidenheid van de hedendaagse kunstpraktijk in Afrika. De tentoongestelde werken zijn tijdens het verblijf van de kunstenaars in Amsterdam gemaakt en door hen aan de Stichting geschonken.
