Pallant House Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition
of drawings in ink on paper by the West Sussex-based
artist Clifford Charles in the De'Longhi Print Room from
16 August to 9 October.
Born in South Africa, Clifford Charles' early work was rooted
in the politics of his home country and reflected the
influence of artists such as Caravaggio, Michelangelo,
Leonardo de Vinci, El Greco and Goya. Early pieces such as
"The Metamorphosis series" (1984/5) were an attempt to
capture the violence and state oppression exhibited on the
streets but which citizens were forbidden to document. The
works depicted the police officials as grotesque figures,
apparently metamorphosing into dogs, stripped of their uniforms and ultimately their humanity
The works exhibited in the exhibition at Pallant House Gallery
reflect the artist's sustained interest in working in ink on
paper. He was drawn to the medium for its potential to be
very basic, simple and instantaneous but also to have an
elaborate vocabulary: 'There is something about working in
ink on paper that lends itself to playing with opposites which
appeals to me - reflected in the dualism of the physical
properties: it is both opaque and transparent, liquid and solid,
coagulated and crystallised', he says.
