2012-05-09 | Thami Mnyele Foundation Open Studio Nisren Abasher Ahmed

Sunday 13th May 2012, 17.00-20.00 hours

You are cordially invited to the Open Studio of Nisren Abasher Ahmed from Sudan. Nisren is currently staying at the Thami Mnyele Foundation as artist in residence during the months of March, April and May.

About her experience of Amsterdam Nisren says: "As I am always relating to the old houses in my country and I try to listen to the walls and the old trees, that are telling a lot of stories. I found the same feeling here, listening to what surrounds me and it's really saying a lot of things. And the diversity of people and cultures in one place gives life another taste."

Nisren Abasher Ahmed, born in Omdurman, Sudan, graduated with a sculpture degree in 2006 at the College of Fine Arts, Sudan University. Besides sculpture she also works with painting, animation and performance. Omdurman is the second largest city in Sudan and Khartoum State, lying on the western banks of the Nile River, opposite the capital, Khartoum. This is the area where Nisren lives and which inspires her greatly. Since 2006 Nisren has taken part in many national and international exhibitions.

Amongst other activities undertaken during her stay in Amsterdam, Nisren collaborated with the German artist Anne-Lisa Lippoldt to make a stop motion animation. "The stop motion 'Egg and Earth' is telling a short story about how we walk in life, how some people fall and some people walk straight. It's about how we behave, how we grow and how we become one again."

Thami Mnyele Foundation promotes the exchange of art and culture between Africa and the Netherlands.
