Thursday 27 June 2013, 19.30 - 22.00
In the studio of the Thami Mnyele Foundation
Bellamystraat 21
Amsterdam 1053 BE
Sultana Haukim, selected by Hedwig Fijen, Director Manifesta, and Thomas Peutz, Director NASA art space, will tell about her work and the art scene in Mauritius Island. She will also speak about 'pARTage art institute' on Mauritius, having its roots in Amsterdam, around ten years ago at the Thami Mnyele Foundation.
pARTage's residency programme aims to support artists in the development of their artistic practice and ideas, offering them an opportunity to live and work in Mauritius in the pARTage house situated on the west coast of the island.
Sultana Haukim, born in Mauritius, studied Fine Arts at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius. For the past few years her work has been focused on issues related to the fate of women in our modern society. Her themes seem often to develop from personal experiences towards certain issues that she is faced with as a Muslim woman and a human being. Living on a multicultural island which has a great influence from Africa and India, she is very much concerned about the condition of women living in countries which are predominated by patriarchal society.
