"Scars" is a body of works created by Sultana Haukim during her three months residency at the Thami Mnyele Foundation in Amsterdam. Far from being a feminist Sultana Haukim investigates situations of women in our modern world, as an artist who herself bears those scars of being a woman.

Despite constitutional equal rights and many successes in the empowerment of women, numerous issues still exist in all spheres of life, all over the globe. Patriarchy affects women throughout their lifetime leaving lifelong scars not always visible.

In Amsterdam Sultana Haukim presents mannequins as a metaphor of the female body that is seen as an object to please, lifeless and dumb. Her sculptural interventions open doors to various interpretations; colour, matter, cut-outs, assemblage, optical play are some of the ingredients which give the mannequins an alternative look to keep the eye alert and the mind awakened so as to create meaningful change for the future of women.

Thami Mnyele Foundation promotes the exchange of art and culture between Africa and the Netherlands.
