We are proud to share the news that 'Lerole: footnotes (The struggle of memory against forgetting' by Dineo Seshee Bopape opened at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. Dineo Seshee Bopape received a Thami Mnyele Foundation artist in residency award in 2011.
'Lerole: footnotes (The struggle of memory against forgetting)' marks the conclusion of the Para | Fictions commissioning series at Witte de With's ground floor gallery, which pairs literature and contemporary art.

Dineo Seshee Bopape is known for structuring her narratives through material and immaterial presences. For her latest work, Bopape takes cues from author James Baldwin's influential lyrical prose and writing. Lerole: footnotes (The struggle of memory against forgetting) is an installation that meditates upon recorded pre-colonial revolts and acts of resistance against European invasion in Africa. In Dineo Seshee Bopape's words, "this work is a meditation on time, 'memory', spirit and 'no', an ephemeral monument, a gesture made in commemoration of those acts and beings."

'Dineo Seshee Bopape seeks to bring justice to those who resisted against, and who were subjected to, colonial violence, through her healing practice via the medium of sculpture' (Defne Ayas).
