Presentation on the ins and outs of the Thami Mnyele Foundation artist in residency and an artist talk with current resident Nigerian photographer Lakin Ogunbanwo, who will be interviewed by Ashleigh McLean from WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa.
Central to Ogunbanwo's artistic research is his desire to document the culture of Lagos; expand the contemporary African visual archive; and bring a story in which the Africans show themselves. He documents the complexities of his culture with veiled portraits and fashion as cultural signifiers, going against the West's monolithic view of Africa.
Lakin Ogunbanwo was selected to receive the Thami Mnyele Foundation Residency Award in 2020. The selection was made by the Foundation, together with Touria El Glaoui, the director of 1-54 Contemporary Art Fair in Marrakesh, Morocco.
