safda adf afs We congratulate Tamrat Gezahegne for receiving the Thami Mnyele Foundation Residency Award in July 2022. Gezahegne will be working in the studio in Amsterdam in the month of July and will be focused on the research of language and art.

Tamrat Gezahegne (Addis Ababa, 1977) graduated from Addis Ababa University, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design with a diploma in painting. He is a founding member of Netsa Art Village which was the most dynamic venue for the flourishing of the contemporary art scene in Ethiopia. Tamrat has shown his works in Egypt, France, Spain, Germany, England, Sweden, Norway, Pakistan, The Netherlands, Morocco, South Africa, the UAE and the USA.

Tamrat's work as an artist ranges from being a landscape and portrait painter to his relentless studio practice and experimentation, as well as installation and performance. Currently his enthusiastic research on indigenous knowledge inculcates his meditations.

Tamrat believes that an artists' endeavour is almost like an enlightened one who enables the culture, the societal knowledge and the aura of the society to be the counterpart of the life that one lives. He aspires for his art to be part of the journey that the society travels through.
