We are happy to share the new podcast ‘The Museum of Black futures’ of our fellow Richard Kofi. The podcast is a part of Project Wiaspora.
A new podcast is out about our future institute for Black art, culture, science and innovation, with the working title The Museum of Black Futures.
Kimberley Smit, Nilton Moreira da Silva, Femi Dawkins and I discuss our ideas, under the musical guidance of Bahghi and Aaron Yemane.
What value does the museum concept still have today? And what does it mean to center Black identities in a European institution? How can a strong connection be made with our communities in Africa, the Caribbean and South America? And how do you collect a collection of the future?
For one of their episodes, they were contacted by the Fathers of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit.
‘Back in the colonial days, they took hundreds of ceremonial artifacts from the African people they converted to Catholicism, on their mission of spreading 'good news' to 'the poor’. This collection forms the basis for the Africa Museum that they founded in 1954, here in the Netherlands. A collection and a building that they hold to this day. Conflict with the organization that researched and managed the collection - making exhibitions and events - led to the closure of the Africa Museum. Now they invited Roché Nieuwendam and I to contribute to a 'future Africa Museum'. In stead, last Saturday Kimberley Smit, Nelgina Khensani van Leeuwen, Juna Leocaria , Femi Dawkins, Roche, Marcellino and I demanded that our Museum of Black Futures team be given full authority in shaping the future of their collection, organization and building. We want ownership! And yes, we recorded the conversation! The podcast will be released very shortly!! You really don't want to miss this one!!’
Podcast is in Dutch.
