On October 3rd, at 5 pm, we are happy to invite you to the exhibition opening of our current resident Sharelly Emanuelson. The exhibition Between a Dance and Sitting in a Chair has been realised in collaboration between Thami Mnyele Foundation and CBK Zuidoost, and will take place at CBK Zuidoost SHEBANG space.
In collaboration with CBK Zuidoost and curator Renske de Jong, Sharelly Emanuelson received Thami Mnyele Foundation award for the second time. In 2019 she was selected in collaboration with curator Sasha Dees.
In the exhibition, Sharelly Emanuelson reflects the Caribbean's spirit of life - the warmth and cheerful island feeling. At the same time, she exposes the underlying layer of the consequences of colonialism on the islands, effects that continue to reverberate to the present. She shows this through themes such as language, ecology, dance or movement, education, poverty, trade and tourism.
The exhibition includes ten large (multimedia) installations which she had been working on during the residency at Thami Mnyele Foundation, as well as a life-size version of an earlier work: Teduki Nobo, which depicts the Antillean flag.
You can see the exhibition until 24 November.
