CBK Zuidoost and BijlmAIR residency programme present 3 of their best artists at UNFAIR24. Halimatu Iddrisu and Razia Barsatie works preview the upcoming exbibition ‘Air in Zuidoost’ (opening December 12th), based at Heesterveld Creative Community. Also featured, are works by Samuel Sarmiento, available for rent or sale from the CBK collection.

Razia Barsatie (1982, based in Amsterdam) has spent the summer of 2024 at the KNUST in Kumasi, to develop new work. In her quest for liberation from both the suppression of emotions and the culturally determined power structures that dominate daily life, she confronts the cultural traditions her ancestors brought from India to Suriname more than 150 years ago. Barsatie explores the scents of herbs from her Surinamese background; either literally or symbolically, combined with video animation and/or drawing on ecological materials. Through her scent art, Barsatie aims to remove the taboos and shame linked to sexuality and gender, thereby contributing to a healthier future mentality.
